Description

Hello everybody and thanks for the humbling contents of this site.

Here's my first post, a portrait I made of a friend of mine. The original inspiration came from Hayao Miyazaki’s film “Princess Mononoke”: a lush magical forest, small creatures, golden light. In the end, I just wanted to paint lots of little things with the character in the middle.

In making the piece I used reference photos of the character and of my native Finnish nature, taken by myself. Those pictures can be found here. References for the creatures I found with Google, those can be found here, here and here.

The piece is hand painted in Photoshop CS with a Wacom pad. Took about 30-60 hours to complete, working between other projects across the time of roughly two moths. Any comments, critics and suggestions to improve my technique and use of colours, composition etc. will be much appreciated!

Hi Cigaro and thanks for you comments!

I wrote a longish description for this but it seems to have been lost in the cyberspace. I thought maybe there's some lag before the description appears, but seems like it won't, so I'll type it all again before the pic gets removed.

Cheers!

Oh, this is magic. All those little details, the colours, the light. Everything contributes to the greatness of this painting. If there's one word to describe this, it is harmony. The expression is pure harmony, yes, the painting radiates of it. And all the parts, from the soft skin of the woman, the shadows cast across her chest, the rough texture of the tree, the bird in flight, are in perfect harmony.

I can see the influences of Mononoke Hime, but you really turned it around your own way creating something very different. I hope you post more soon, because I want to see more of your magical world!

Whoaa, thanks for the positive feedback folks! Much, much appreciated.

Azurite: I hope I won't disappoint you too much, but these personal projects tend to get run over by the more urgent ones. I really wish I could devote more time for this kinda personal stuff not connected to any other project whatsoever, but then again, I take it that's a common problem people have. The real life.... the frikkin real life to look after. Geesh louise. But Miyazaki's stuff, so inspiring. I feel like born again after every film by him I see, the sheer amount inspiration they give you. They are.... harmonious! Thanks a lot for that!

I try to be a bit quicker with the next one but don't hold your breath, hehe. Might end up disappointed. Thanks for the trust anyway, makes me wanna try!

Vamp4444: Ei se mallikaan ruma ollut... kippis!

blindsoul: Cheers, Mother Nature/Earth -theme was something I had vaguely in mind when doing this one, but I though emphasizing it too much would take the focus away from the person portrayed. I was extremely tempted to go for that, her emerging from the ground, fusing completely with the environment... might have turned out a bit freaky, though. Nice to know there's still at least a flavour of it present.

Valera: Thanks, life is beautiful here.

Cheerios!

It's absolutely marvelous. Very good painting and good references (thx for the link). The neck and the shoulder have a "blurry" effect a little strange imo. And I`d like more blending between the hair and the roots-leaves.
I love the details(the leaves, the dragonfly,...) and the background texture. It's a wonderful piece. congratulations.

Thank you Z. The blurry broken edges I thought would create some hierarchy between the line qualities: blurry edges and transitions at areas where I don't want too much attention, sharp edges at areas where the focus is. This should contribute to the whole composition of the image. This is something I learned from a tutorial by Craig Mullins at this particular site - to try and pay attention to the line quality and create hierarchy in the painting with it. Of course, this is just my interpretation of the thoughts he presented, and I'm hardly mastering this aspect of image making. I just tried to keep it in mind and make use of it, but I'll try to pay more attention to it in future pieces to make it work better. Thanks for the crit and pointing that out!

The hair could definitely do with some more blending with the surroundings, now that I look at the painting after some time since I finished it. At the time of making it, I didn't want to overdo the fusing with the environment, but I could have pushed it a bit more.

Also, thanks for the compliments, everybody!

this ist absolutely great. I like the way you rendered the moss covered surfaces I'm really curious about the brushes you used for that. The picture is in my opinion perfect. I would fancy some water though because this water and moss thing is what I really like about mononoke. But that is just the way I would like to see this beautiful world you created there.

Hello all the nice people, and thanks again for the encouraging comments!

FabLD: I used one texture exlusively for most of the piece and especially the moss: the bark of a huge tree I came across near my house. In different scales it goes for pretty much anything. Combined with round and spackled brushes there's enough variation to make it interesting. I think you can get a lot out of certain textures if you invert it every once in a while, since then you can emphasize the structure with, say, dark colour versus the light one you use with non-inverted. And of course playing with the scale helps a lot. Still, I dropped highlights and small round brush -painted bits here and there to tweak the result to fit in the piece. But the texture alone was wonderful to build on. Hope the above makes sense and helps.

Also, I had some hints of water around her at first but couldn't make them work. Maybe with some tools and workflow established, it might be worth to visit this environment again at some future painting and try to incorporate some water as well. I liked the shallow clear waters in Mononoke too, the way it enhanced the unspoiled quality of that magical forest.

Cheers!
